Isles govt amending ZIPA Act to boost fisheries » The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ) has said it is planning to amend the Isles Investment Act (ZIPA) to enhance productivity in fishery and agricultural industries. This was said by State Minister in the President’s Office, (Finance, Economy and Development Planning), Omar Yussuf Mzee. He was responding to a question by Representative Rashid Seif Suleiman (Ziwani, CCM) during the on-going House of Representatives session in Zanzibar. He said that investments in fisheries and agriculture has not been very impressive since the Isles government started inviting investors. “The government is working on the amendments on the Investment Act for the purpose of enhancing productivity in these sectors,” he said. The Seventh Phase Government, he said, has decided to form a special ministry to work on management matters in order to give a new push on the sector including attracting more investors. Either, he said industry, fishery and agricultural sectors have been given special priority in order to help create more employment opportunities, steer economic growth and kick out poverty. The Representative had earlier wanted to know the measures taken by the government to strengthen economic areas instead of just concentrating on tourist hotel building at the neglect of sectors such as fisheries which could also contribute immensely in the national economy. Though Zanzibar is an island, it does not have a single fish processing plant, a thing constraining the Isles SOURCE: THE GUARDIAN Thursday, 23 June 2011 07:08
